The Toronto Police Service recently shared an update regarding a series of sexual assault cases. With this information at our fingertips, we’re shedding light on a horrendous sequence of events that occurred on December 7, 2023.
Police received a series of distress calls from multiple areas around Toronto, one after another, reporting the alleged sexual assaults of innocent bystanders by the same suspect. These offenses apparently happened in public and daylight, rattling city residents’ sense of safety and tranquility.
Details of the Heartbreaking Incidences
Each unfolding assault incident was similar, starting with a call from the Robert Street and College Street area around approximately 8:01 a.m. While going about their daily routine, a victim was approached by the alleged perpetrator, assaulted, and then left behind as the attacker fled the scene.
The same sequence was replicated almost every ten minutes in other areas of the city: Beverley Street and College Street area at 8:10 a.m., Kings Colleges Road and College Street area at 8:17 a.m., St George Street and College Street area at 8:20 a.m., and finally, Yonge Street and Gerrard Street East area at 8:41 a.m.
Capture of the Suspected Offender
Bringing some relief to the citizenship, the Toronto Police Service, specifically the Sex Crimes Unit, arrested a suspect, 23-year-old Surafiel Tewelde of Toronto. Tewelde was charged with five counts of sexual assault aligning with the reported incidents. His court hearing is scheduled at the Toronto Regional Bail Centre, 2201 Finch Avenue West, on December 9, 2023, at 10 a.m., in room 106.
